Xiaomi-Mi-Note-10-Back.jpg

Of the four cameras, featured by the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, the normal lens and the super wide angle lens offer very solid results. Hower, the absolute winner is the main camera – reaching the highest single score up to now.

Wide angle (main camera) – 1.7/6.7 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 23 mm), 108 MP sensor, JPEG with 27 or 108 MP

108 megapixels are stunning – and in bright light situations, the Mi Note 10 makes good use of the potential. Images taken in this maximum resolution show partly some more details than the also very good 27 MP JPEGs, which are generated by the phone applying pixel binning. In order to do this, the Xiaomi always combines the data of four pixels. As the 108 MP provides more resolution only in high-contrast structures, but in terms of Dead Leaves the 27 MP stays ahead, we recommend using the 27 MP mode even when taking photos in bright light situations. Xiaomi manages to keep this performance level even when the light is decreasing. Obviously, fine details are reduces and artefacts increase, but all within an acceptable range. Users who are keen on experimenting, can also take well editable DNGs instead of the JPEGs at 27 megapixels. Then, re-sharpening and de-noising can be individually controlled. Our assessment is based on the overall higher score of the 27 MP solution.

Normal focal length – 2/8.2 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 41 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

As one of only few smartphones in this test, the Xiaomi offers both a tele unit and a 2x zoom. In the comparison of lenses with normal focal length, it ranks among the best – but it stands no chance against the wide angle. Depending on the motive, a section of the wide angle lens can look more natural. Resolution and Dead Leaves values are high for 12 MP, but Xiamo pays for this with a violent edge enhancement. This may work well for landscapes or architecture, but makes the normal lens less suitable for portrait photos. Here again, the best result can be obtained by approaching the motive closer and refraining from using the zoom.

Tele lens – 2/8.74 mm

(35mm equivalent: 80 mm), 5 MP sensor, JPEG with 8 MP

Although the sensor actually only offers 5 MP, the tele JPEGs are saved at 8 MP. But this does not help much. The sensor’s resolution is too low, which cannot be compensated by upscaling. Especially in bright light, the Xiaomi emphasizes the edges too much. With this modulation, the tele lens is not able to convince already in bright illumation. When the light decreases, the image quality deteriorates significantly.

Super wide angle – 2.2/2.35 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 16 mm), 20 MP sensor, JPEG with 20 MP

We like the super wide angle lens more than the tele. Its 20 MP sensors captures many details in the image center – in the corners, the resolution is considerably lower. Above that, the quality declines only moderately with less light. Remarkable is the cautious signal processing. While the Xiaomi’s normal and tele cameras are tuned distinctly too hard, the super wide angle camera only acts very restrained on the edges. Thus, the images look natural but lack a tad of sharpness. All of this is however not sufficient to come closer to the performance of the Huawei P40 Pro.
