Sony's Xperia 1 III offers a trend-setting telephoto camera that can switch between two focal lengths in addition to the main and super-wide-angle camera. Sony still relies throughout on 12 megapixels the resolution. The main camera and super-wide-angle get a very good rating. Sony usually keeps the image quality high for quite a long time even in low light with the comparatively large pixels. However, the 12-megapixel sensor lacks the resolution to quite catch up with the high-resolution cameras of the competition with 50 to 100 megapixels in terms of points.
However, the most exciting feature is the new telephoto camera with a zoom that can switch between two focal lengths. Here, Sony obviously transfers know-how from its camera to its smartphone division. The tele zoom scores with its flexibility and a good to very good image quality in bright light.

 

Wide angle (main camera) – 1.7/5.1 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 24 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

The main camera of the Xperia 1 III has a large 1/1.7-inch sensor with 12 megapixels. Thanks to this smaller resolution and larger pixels, Sony wants to achieve better performance in low light. The concept works out because the 1 III degrades comparatively moderately over the light levels.
However, the downside of this solution is that Sony cannot match the resolution of competitors with 48, 64 and 108 MP sensors in high light. For a 12MP sensor, the quality in high light (5000 lux) is convincing: The resolution fits and neither artifacts nor noise are an issue. In fading light (200 lux), Sony only degrades a bit and even at night (5 lux), the losses remain moderate. Thus, resolution at night remains at a good level - both for high and low contrast structures, but noise is added. However, this looks quite natural and does not disfigure the image with too strong denoising artifacts.
The signal processing sharpens the edges without excesses and also raises the contrasts moderately - it intervenes more intensively at the picture's edges, probably to compensate for the edge drop. Overall, the Xperia 1 III offers a very good wide-angle camera, but its smaller resolution of 12 megapixels does not allow it to reach a top position compared to other wide-angle cameras.

 

Normal focal length – 2.3/10 mm lens 

(35mm equivalent: 70 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

Sony's telephoto can switch between two focal lengths - 70 and 105 mm KB - and shoot at 12 megapixels each. The shorter tele with 2.9x zoom performs a bit worse than the longer one - despite the higher speed. 
In high light (5000 lux), the short tele achieves a good image quality - admittedly below the performance of the main camera. But since the zoom factor brings the subjects closer, the optics have a clear, practical use. In low light (200 lux), the short tele only degrades a little bit. The resolution only changes slightly, but artifacts appear as a result of the noise reduction: With the short tele, the signal processing works less cleanly than with the other cameras and leaves more artifacts behind. In low light, these do not bother much, but at night (5 lux), the effect intensifies to such an extent that we rather avoid this combination. 

 

Tele lens – 2.8/14 mm

(35mm equivalent: 105 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

The long tele with its 4.4x zoom - still 105 mm Full Frame equivalent - brings the subjects even closer and even images them slightly better than the short tele in bright light. If the image quality is convincing in a lot of light, it drops more noticeably when the light fades. The camera also has to fight noise more with the longer telephoto - even more than with the short tele due to a smaller aperture. The low-light photos lose details, which are now softly drawn and show artifacts especially at the edges.

 

Super wide angle – 2.2/2.7 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 16 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

The super-wide-angle camera has a 12-megapixel sensor and delivers a coherent, low-distortion image in a lot of light (5000 lux). The edge distribution is a bit stronger, but the overall signal processing is good. In low light (200 Lux), there is some noise in the image, but it is not annoying. The resolution even increases slightly due to stronger sharpening. Overall, the image quality remains at the 5000 lux level. At night, however, the super-wide angle visibly degrades: noise and artifacts increase and the resolution decreases.
