The OnePlus 8 Pro ranks very high in the test of the wide angle and tele cameras, but also features a good super wide angle camera. Only the normal focal length – here produced digitally – cannot match the otherwise very high performance level.

 

Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/6.59 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 25 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 48 MP

When taking photos with the main camera of the OnePlus 8 Pro, in bright light situations the user should refrain from using the pixel binning and take the JPEGs with the full 48 MP. This is rewarded by images with finer details. Thus, the measurement values for resolution and Dead Leaves rise by up to 40 percent. Still, One Plus should go ahead a little more moderately when it comes to edge enhancement. 

When the light fades, the quality level of the camera sinks, but still manages to keep up the quality level quite well – better than some devices with a lower number of pixels. Even 48 MP images taken in the dark can still be used, even if the level of detail visibly sinks while noise at the same time increases. Our assessment is based on the overall higher score of the 48 MP solution.

 

Normal focal length – 1.8/6.59 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 50 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP

In lack of a real 2x zoom lens, the wide angle camera supplies digitally cut out and upscaled 12 MP JPEGs. We rather advise against using it. The digital zoom delivers images with less details. The values for resolution and Dead Level decrease distinctly – which applies to all three illumination situations in our test. We would recommend – if possible – to approach the motive closer instead of using the digital zoom.

 

Tele lens – 2.4/6.95 mm

(35mm equivalent: 70 mm), 8 MP sensor, JPEG with 8 MP

Eight megapixels do not provide a particularly broad data source, und thus the tele camera is not able to challenge the wide angle camera in terms of image quality. As in all smartphones, also this tele camera uses a smaller sensor, which leads to less details, more artefacts and more noise in the images. This is especially true when the light decreases and when comparing the images to those of the main camera. When sufficient illumination is provided, the tele pictures can still keep up. Especially the Dear Leaves results are on a nice level. But when the light decreases, the small pixels take their toll, the image quality is deteriorating rapidly. But all criticism aside: When looking at the tele cameras of all smart phones, the solution from One Plus is still among the best on today’s marketplace.

 

Super wide angle – 2.2/3.05 mm LENS

(35mm equivalent: 14 mm), 48 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 or 48 MP

Then again, the super wide angle camera makes a good impression. It does not totally match the wide angle camera, but offers a comparatively good quality. In bright light, switching to the 48 MP resolution is advisable, When the light fades, the photographer should stick with 12 MP – and change back to the main camera at darkness. All in all, the super wide angle module is one of the better offers in the marketplace. Our assessment is based on the higher score of the 12 MP solution.
