In high light, the wide-angle camera trumps with 64MP JPEGs and delivers top quality. In lower light, it can't keep the bar high, even with 16MP resolution. The wide-angle is less of an option as a normal camera, and the super-wide-angle is not convincing either. 

 

Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/5.6 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 64 MP sensor, JPEG with 64 or 16 MP

As with many other smartphones, Asus' 64MP wide-angle camera allows the user to choose between 64MP and 16MP resolution. In our test, the 64 wins overall, mainly due to its performance in high light (5000 lux). When the light is optimal, 64MP manages much more detailed shots with a clear lead over the 16MP JPEGs. In this scenario, the Asus images are among the best.
However, as the light fades, the quality quickly degrades to average. Even in light twilight shots, the 16MP resolution can already be the better choice. At night (5 lux), the 16MP photos are clearly ahead, but even these are then at most sufficient overall.

 

Normal focal length – 1.8/5.6 mm lens 

(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), # MP sensor, JPEG with 16 MP

Without an optical telephoto, the Asus ROG Phone 5 has to zoom with the wide-angle camera and only takes pictures with 16 MP resolution. In high light, the normal focal length is an option, as the brightness decreases, the normal focal length visibly decreases and is then no longer recommended.

 

Super wide angle – 2.2/2.1 mm lens

(35mm equivalent: 16 mm), 13 MP sensor, JPEG with 13 MP

The super-wide angle from Asus is not an overachiever. In high light (5000 lux), the 13MP module hardly delivers convincing pictures: the fine detail is nowhere near the level of good modules like that of the Oneplus 9. Instead, the Asus pictures already show artifacts at 5000 lux. With decreasing light (200 Lux) and even more at night (5 Lux), the SWW degrades too much to be an option for photographers.
