The iPhone has its strong points, but as a photo smartphone it only looks good with sufficient light. The super wide angle lens scores only moderately, a true tele lens is missing completely. The gap to the best devices in our assessment is considerable.
Wide angle (main camera) – 1.8/4.25 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 26 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
With the main camera, Apple achieves a very good, but not an outstanding images quality – the gap to the devices with 48 MP and more is distinct. Indeed, the iPhone delivers beautiful, warm colors and a good exposure, but the structure of detail both at good as well as at decreasing light cannot match the results of a Huawei P40 Pro. Compared to the Pixel 4, which also offers 12 MP, the bigger losses of the iPhone at decreasing light are eye-catching. At least, the camera stays usable also in the night.
Normal focal length – 2/6 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 52 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
At a 35mm equivalent of 52 mm, the iPhone’s tele camera actually offers a normal focal length – and thus is tested in this category. In bright light, the normal camera reproduces motives almost at the same quality as the main camera – particularly for portraits, the normal camera is very well suited. But in less light, the normal camera falls behind a little sooner, due to its slower lens and its smaller sensor. If is only somewhat dark, the results are still acceptable. For night shots, however, the main camera is the better choice.
Super wide angle – 2.4/1,54 mm lens
(35mm equivalent: 13 mm), 12 MP sensor, JPEG with 12 MP
The super wide angle lens shows some heavy distortions and additionally offers no auto focus – which limits its usability. Anyway, its imaging quality is basically only okay in situations with much light, and even then it does not exactly cover itself with glory. The Dead Leaves results fall short of our expectations even with bright light, and clearly fall behind with decreasing light. In the night, the super wide angle lens is hardly useable – the images turn out too dark, show a lot of noise and lack in details.
